Landis+Gyr Project Profiles

Role: Lead product designer
Client: Landis+Gyr

Landis+Gyr is a leading provider of energy management solutions. They offer advanced metering infrastructure and smart grid technologies that help utilities modernize their energy systems.

As the lead product designer for the Landis+Gyr client, I led two related projects. The first was the creation of a web-based developer community that offered app development education, community engagement, and technical support for developers working on applications for a smart meter. The second project involved designing a mobile Wi-Fi provisioning app that seamlessly connected users' networks to the Landis+Gyr's smart meter.

Discovery

We hosted a design strategy workshop with client stakeholders, business analysts, technical experts and design resources. During this session, we reviewed Landis+Gyr's vision, concerns, and requirements, then we collaboratively conceptualized potential solutions. We outlined a first-phase plan to design and implement a minimum viable product (MVP) for a developers' community. This community would target employees and contractors from large utility companies, partner organizations, and independent developers. Additionally, we identified the need for additional functionality and a content management system for the community’s administrative personnel.

Research

We conducted an in-depth competitive analysis of other developer communities and forums, identifying common features and new functionalities to enhance support for our primary audiences. We held user interviews with our internal engineering team, the client’s team, and partner resources, most of whom actively use developer communities. From these activities, we delivered a detailed report of findings and recommendations and created initial personas and user journeys.

UX/UI Design

Based on user and market research and the client's style guide, we developed flowcharts, wireframes, high-fidelity mockups, and an interactive prototype. The client's style guide, initially geared toward print design with limited digital references, was adapted into a comprehensive design system in Figma. This system included type, color, and logo specifications, as well as components, variables, and design tokens ensuring consistency across digital platforms.

Measurement and hand off

To validate our design decisions, we conducted internal usability tests using the interactive prototype. Feedback from these tests was documented, presented to the client, and incorporated into the design to reflect desired changes and enhancements. Throughout the entire design process, we collaborated with the technical team to ensure that the design artifacts were both useful and optimized for implementation.

Discovery + Process

Utilized an Agile work process and collaborated closely with the client and the entire internal team to discuss and document the project backlog, identifying all necessary tasks for the project's design and development. Conducted weekly requirements meetings, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives to review completed work, ensuring continuous progress through each project sprint.

Research

Conducted a market analysis that included a functional comparison of various Wi-Fi provisioning apps available in the marketplace. Additionally, I informally interviewed colleagues who use smart technologies in their homes to gain insights and enhance the analysis.

UX/UI design

Developed flow charts, wireframes, and high-fidelity mockups for both iOS and Android platforms, incorporating light and dark modes. The application was designed to be "white-labeled," enabling various utilities to customize the app according to their brand specifications. The final steps included designing a fully-functioning prototype and adding mobile elements to the Landis+Gyr design system in Figma.

Testing and developer hand off

Delivered an annotated prototype, along with design components and tokens from Figma, to the development and testing team. We iterated on the design based on feedback from testing, development, and the client, ensuring continuous improvement throughout the process.
